Keymod Handguards

KeyMod is an open-source accessory mounting system developed by VLTOR Weapon Systems and released into the public domain in 2012. The system uses a series of keyhole-shaped slots machined directly into the handguard body. Accessories attach by inserting a T-nut or locking tab into the wide end of the slot, rotating it to engage, and tightening it in place. The result is a direct-attach connection with no loose rail sections required unless you specifically want a Picatinny section at a given position.

• How KeyMod Differs from a Picatinny Quad Rail: A traditional MIL-STD-1913 quad rail surrounds the barrel with raised Picatinny rail sections at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock positions for the full length of the handguard. This provides maximum accessory compatibility but adds significant weight and creates a bulky grip profile that many shooters find uncomfortable. KeyMod eliminates the unused rail sections entirely. The handguard surface is smooth or minimally textured, and Picatinny rail sections can be added only where needed using short accessory rail segments. This reduces overall weight, slims the profile, and removes the sharp edges that full quad rails put in your support hand.
• KeyMod Slot Spacing and Accessory Compatibility: The KeyMod slot spacing is based on MIL-STD-1913 dimensions, which means Picatinny rail sections drop in at the same intervals used across the broader AR accessory market. Because the system is open-source and its specifications are publicly available, there are hundreds of KeyMod-compatible accessories from manufacturers across the industry, including lights, grips, bipods, sling mounts, and rail segments. YHM's own KeyMod accessories page includes bipod mounts, accessory rails, and other direct-attach options designed to work with their handguards.

YHM's current KeyMod handguard offering is the S.L.R. (Slim, Light, Rail) Slant series. The S.L.R. name captures the design intent: it is YHM's slimmest handguard profile, built to reduce weight without sacrificing the full-length accessory mounting that tactical builds require. The Slant designation refers to the angled front section, which creates a continuous Picatinny top rail from the upper receiver to the muzzle end without a gap or height change.

• S.L.R. Slant Specter Length (9.5"): The S.L.R. Slant in Specter length is a 9.5-inch free-float KeyMod handguard for mid-length gas system builds. It features a 9-inch continuous Picatinny top rail (measured along the top) and a 10.15-inch overall length along the bottom. The front 4 inches of the handguard run as a quad rail section at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions, providing 2.75 inches of fixed rail at 3 and 9 o'clock and 3.25 inches at the 6 o'clock position at the muzzle end. Total weight is 13.05 oz. Construction is 6061-T6 aluminum with mil-spec hard coat anodizing in matte black. The system is both piston and gas tube capable. All installation hardware is included: barrel nut, barrel nut wrench, four 7/64 Allen head screws, and a 7/64 Allen wrench. Accepts all KeyMod accessories including YHM's own accessory rail (YHM-9205A).
• Installation and Compatibility: The S.L.R. Slant uses YHM's mounting system that requires no additional tools beyond what is included in the box. It fits standard mil-spec AR-15 uppers and is designed for mid-length gas system configurations at the Specter length. YHM provides installation instructions for the S.L.R. series separately from the S.L.K. and KR7 instructions, so make sure you are using the correct guide for the handguard you are installing. If you need a replacement barrel nut or wrench, YHM sells these individually as the S.L.R. Barrel Nut (YHM-5101) and S.L.R. Wrench (YHM-5102).

KeyMod and M-LOK are the two dominant direct-attach accessory mounting systems in the current AR-15 market. Choosing between them largely comes down to what accessories you already own and what you plan to run.

• When KeyMod Makes Sense: KeyMod is a strong choice if you already own KeyMod-compatible accessories or are building on a platform where KeyMod components are specified. The system has broad manufacturer support due to its open-source nature, and the accessory ecosystem is well established. YHM's S.L.R. Slant is particularly well suited to mid-length carbine builds where slimness, weight savings, and a seamless top rail are priorities. The fixed quad rail section at the muzzle end gives you dedicated real estate for a light or grip without needing to source an additional rail segment.
• KeyMod vs M-LOK on YHM Handguards: YHM produces both KeyMod and M-LOK handguards. The M-LOK lineup, represented by the MR7 series, is broader in available lengths and currently more widely stocked. M-LOK uses T-nuts with rectangular slots and is licensed by Magpul to manufacturers. KeyMod uses the keyhole slot system with a 100-degree chamfered interface designed to resist slippage under recoil. Both are durable, lightweight, and free-float designs machined from 6061-T6 aluminum. If you are starting fresh and have no existing accessory investment, either system works well; the choice comes down to which accessories you want to run and which system your existing gear supports.
