Muzzle Device FAQs
How often do I need to replace my barrel crush washer?
Since crush washers work through the compression of their material, it is recommended that you replace the crush washer every time you remove or replace your muzzle device.
What does an AR-15 crush washer do?
Crush washers on AR-15s are used to help secure a muzzle device to the firearm. They do this by allowing the muzzle device to be torqued down far enough to compress or crush the washer.
This helps mate the device to the rifle, but it is very hard to manually do this without introducing some minor variance in the device’s position on the barrel. This does not matter for most muzzle devices, but for things like sound suppressors, it can result in baffle strikes. To avoid baffle strikes, do not use a crush washer with your suppressor.
When do I need to use barrel shims?
Barrel shims are used when it is necessary to orient the rotation (time) of the muzzle device to the firearm and you cannot risk introducing any misalignment. For example, when mounting a Q.D. muzzle device for a silencer.
What is a muzzle device?
A muzzle device is a specially designed accessory that attaches to the barrel of a firearm to modify the performance of the gun when it fires. This can be to mitigate recoil, muzzle flash, or some combination of the two. Other muzzle devices can affect the sound of the gunshot.
What are the different types of muzzle devices?
Muzzle devices are divided into four major categories: flash hiders, compensators, muzzle brakes, and suppressors. Some variants combine compensators with either flash hiders or muzzle brakes.
Are there legal restrictions for any type of muzzle device?
Some locations do ban muzzle devices and some muzzle devices like suppressors are heavily regulated depending on your location. However, most locations will allow you to have a muzzle device, check your local laws before purchase.
What are the benefits of thread protectors?
Thread protectors prevent the threads from being damaged when an accessory is not installed.
Can I shoot my firearm with a thread protector installed?
Yes. You can shoot your firearm with the thread protector on and it is recommended to do so if you don’t want your barrel’s threads to get dirty or damaged.
Do thread protectors impact performance?
Thread protectors will not impact performance if they are secure when firing your weapon. The weight of thread protectors will not affect accuracy.
