Duck Hunting With a Shotgun Suppressor: Protecting Your Ears and Your Dog's

Every duck hunter knows the moment. It's still dark, the coffee is hot, the marsh is cold, and your dog is sitting beside you, wet and alert, watching the sky like opening morning is the most important day of the year. Then the birds start to move.

In the excitement, it's easy to forget how much sound gets trapped inside a duck blind. A shotgun blast is loud in an open field. Inside a blind, with hunting partners and a retriever only a few feet away, it's punishing.

We protect ourselves with earplugs or electronic muffs. Our dogs almost never get the same consideration.

Your Retriever Is Closer to the Muzzle Than You Think

A good retriever may hear hundreds of shotgun blasts in a single season and thousands over a career. Most of those shots happen with the dog sitting beside the hunter or staged just ahead of the muzzle.

Dogs can't tell us their ears are ringing. They can't explain that certain sounds are getting harder to pick up. Often the first sign is a dog that stops responding as quickly to verbal commands and starts leaning on hand signals instead.

That can look like stubbornness or simple aging. But according to Dr. Kari Foss, a veterinary neurologist at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, loud noise damages the delicate hair cells in a dog's cochlea, and anyone working around hunting or police dogs should be aware of a dog's proximity to gunfire and consider hearing protection.

A suppressor won't eliminate every hearing risk. But cutting the sound at the muzzle is a meaningful way to make the blind easier on everyone in it, including the dog that never misses a hunt.

How Much Sound a Shotgun Suppressor Actually Removes

Research published through the CDC by Murphy et al. measured suppressors reducing peak sound pressure at the shooter's ear by 17 to 24 decibels, with even larger reductions for someone standing a meter behind the shooter. That's roughly the position of the guy next to you on the bench seat, and it isn't far off where your dog sits.

Our own testing puts the VICTRA-12 at 135 dB at the shooter's ear in its full 12-inch configuration and 141 dB at 6 inches. The VICTRA-20 measures 132 dB at 10 inches and 138 dB at 4 inches.

The same CDC research is blunt about the limits: suppressors are an effective engineering control, but suppressed gunfire can still cause hearing damage, and shooters should keep wearing hearing protection. Think of a suppressor as another layer, not a replacement for plugs or muffs.

The VICTRA-12 and VICTRA-20 in a Duck Blind

You Can Still Hear the Hunt

Duck hunting runs on communication. Someone spots birds working the far end of the marsh. Another hunter calls the direction. The handler gives a command. Everybody needs to know when it's safe to stand, swing, and shoot.

Taking the edge off the muzzle blast makes that conversation easier before and after the shot, and it helps you keep track of what's happening around the blind.

The shotgun is not silent. You'll still hear the shot, the action cycling, and everything else that makes a morning in the marsh feel like duck season. The difference is that the blast is controlled instead of punishing to the people and animals standing next to you.

Mounting, Chokes, and Patterning Before Opening Day

Check Your State's Waterfowl Regulations

Suppressors are legal to own in most states and legal to hunt with in most of those, but waterfowl regulations are set state by state and can differ from big game rules. Confirm the current rules with your state wildlife agency before opening day.

Our dogs don't care how early the alarm goes off. They don't complain about the cold, the mud, or the long wait between flights. They just want to be there.

That kind of loyalty earns something back.
